Skin 101: Our favourite skincare products for those who sweat for a living

You show up. You work. You sweat. So other than wiping it off with our cold lemongrass towels, what do you do with that sweat after class?

We asked our frequently perspiring staff to share their secrets for keeping their post-workout face squeaky clean and glowing. Together we sweat and together we can sparkle with these skin care tips:

"Ocean salt from Lush is my magical skin secret. It has ingredients that will kill any bacteria from your face and unclog any pores - vodka and pieces of actual sea salt. Fresh cosmetic’s soy face cleanser or Glossier’s milky gel cleanser will take off any face and eye makeup gently while gently cleansing your face. I recommend using a face oil at night and a moisturizer in the morning. For my fellow puffy eyed people, pick up a jade roller and put it in the fridge overnight to use in the morning."—EMILY, YEG Key Leader

"Literally coconut oil everywhere. Like everywhere. Oh and never leave the house without putting that SPF on your face! It always goes under my makeup and it acts as anti-aging so...."RUHEE, YEG MO

"Fresh Skin Care - formulated for skin that sweats. I always keep a pack of makeup wipes in my bag so I can wipe my face down before class."— MORGAN, YEG MO

"Humans sweat to cool ourselves, not to excrete waste products or clear toxic substances. That’s what our kidneys and liver are for! Several beauty brands claim that since sweat helps to facilitate detoxification, their products must be used specifically and promptly post-workout to cleanse away toxins that reach the top of the skin or else they’ll be reabsorbed. This is completely false (trust me, it’s been proven scientifically, I can send you the manuscripts!). Rather, it’s a marketing scheme. This leads to my second tip….Sweat is water soluble! Which means that, unless your face has come into direct contact with equipment that could contain harmful bacteria, or unless you have visible dirt on the skin, you only need water to wash your face after a spin class. Not only will you save $$$ in marking those beauty products last longer, but your face will also retain more moisture and you do not run the risk of over-exfoliating."—STEPHANA, YYC MO

"There is an excellent spa one 124th street called Lipstick Empire! I just went to them for a free trial and am getting a facial and a good facial is always fun, relaxing, and sometimes needed. They personalize the facials based on your skin type too!"—KYLIE, YEG MO

"I live by the Neutrogena grapefruit collection life-changing in all the best ways possible."—JASMYN, YEG MO/Manager

"Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize and always use coconut oil to take your makeup off"—ANGIE, YEG Manager

We always suggest that you further stretch after class to give your muscles a little bit more love. So how about you give your skin a little bit more love too?
